“We can't direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails."
This quote perfectly encapsulates the inspiring story of how Gareth Bishop, a member of the Vocus Wholesale & Infrastructure team, overcame adversities with his positive attitude, resilience and adaptability.
Gareth's life took an unexpected turn in 2014 when a serious accident left him in a wheelchair for a year. But his unwavering passion for sailing became a guiding light during his recovery. With the support of Sailability, a global organisation helping sailors with disabilities or mobility challenges, Gareth found his way back to the water, sailing a Hansa 303 boat adapted for sailors with mobility challenges.
“I started sailing a Hansa 303 which is for one or two persons, designed for people with disabilities/mobility issues,” Gareth recalls. “I was able to sail independently again, which gave me a great feeling of freedom, especially when spending a lot of time at home and being confined to a wheelchair every time I went outside.”
Eventually, with regular practice and dedication, Gareth was able to walk independently, and started volunteering at Sailability, helping other disabled sailors.
His love for sailing led him to competitive waters, where he honed his skills in various regattas. In 2024, his hard work and dedication shone through when he was named ‘Most Improved Sailor’. Now, Gareth is set to participate in the esteemed Hansa Class World Championships in March 2025.
“Currently, there are 154 registered entrants (two sailors per boat for the 303 doubles class) and 55 in my division (303 singles class). I know the competition will be tough – top sailors from France, Portugal, Italy, and Australia will be competing! I will be training every Saturday until March, and aim at giving my best. I will be using the sails that were on the winning boat in the Invictus Games 2018,” he says with a twinkle of excitement and hope in his eyes.
When Gareth is not sailing, he is busy embracing life to the fullest. He cherishes cycling with a pedal-assisted e-bike, skiing with a sit-ski, and practicing adaptive yoga daily to overcome mobility issues.
Gareth’s story is a shining example of our Vocus values. We truly believe that our Vocus people are the difference, and we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace that empowers every individual to navigate life's challenges and achieve their aspirations.
As Gareth continues to chart his course in the world of sailing, he has the unwavering support of the entire Vocus family cheering him on. His journey serves as a reminder that with determination and willingness to adjust our sails, we can weather any storm and come out stronger on the other side.
