After Shilpa Kavadia had her first child, she took an extended maternity break from her impressive global career. That break then turned into a sabbatical, giving her opportunity to focus on her two children. Six years later, when Shilpa’s children settled into kindergarten and preschool, she felt it was time to re-enter the workforce.
Vocus was the first company she interviewed for, and in September 2022, Shilpa joined as a Sales Strategy Lead. We sat down with Shilpa to hear about her experience of working full-time again after an extensive break, and how she’s going in her new role.
"Returning to work at Vocus has been a dream – I couldn’t have asked for a better re-start. People have been very considerate and understanding, knowing that re-entering the workforce after a long sabbatical (with little kids) is not easy. I am so grateful to have been provided all the tools and learnings I needed to make my return a success."
Shilpa: Returning to work at Vocus has been a dream – I couldn’t have asked for a better re-start. People have been very considerate and understanding, knowing that re-entering the workforce after a long sabbatical (with little kids) is not easy. I am so grateful to have been provided all the tools and learnings I needed to make my return a success.
Shilpa: I loved that Vocus is a challenger telco – being big enough to be leading in connectivity and yet small enough to disrupt. I was inspired by the ambitious growth plans, drive and the leadership team’s ‘can-do’ attitude.
Shilpa: I love the general vibe at Vocus, both working in the office and at home. The people truly work as “one team” and help each other beyond the call of duty. There is warmth and genuineness in every interaction – it’s such a welcoming and diverse place.
Shilpa: I’d say how much the company does for its employees – whether it be for their mental wellbeing, professional development or career progression. The HR practices are some of the best I’ve seen – there is a huge emphasis on employee empowerment and learning, which is exciting to see.
Shilpa: I’m currently working on a program that is transforming our sales and go-to-market operating model to make it more competitive in the post pandemic world. The multi-faceted program will enable us to achieve ambitious growth targets while also overhauling our account management to offer an improved customer experience.
Shilpa: Absolutely. I recently learned about a company policy which allows employees to swap a public holiday for a traditional or religious holiday that’s aligned to their culture. For example, this year Diwali fell on a Monday. I didn’t want to take annual leave in my first month on the job, but I also didn’t want to miss out on this important holiday. When my manager told me about the option to swap the public holidays around, I was instantly relieved. I have been working in Australia for more than 10 years, and I have yet to see this done elsewhere.
Shilpa: Vocus is an equal opportunity employer. I have heard from many colleagues that they were supported and nurtured to move into their dream role, even if it was in a different business unit. Vocus has a genuine care for its people.
Shilpa: You will be pleasantly surprised with the people and culture at Vocus. It’s a great place to be and you will be inspired by the challenges and disruptions we bring to the telco industry. Plus, the flexibility of working hours and hybrid working makes it one of the best places to work.
