Ben Rayner

Vocus Graduate

A passion for technology and a desire for great culture has led Ben to make a true difference at Vocus

A keen interest in technology and a passion for problem solving led Ben to study Computer Science at the University of New South Wales. Following some work experience in the telecommunications industry and his personal interests, Ben was pretty serious about moving into a telco once he completed his degree.

“Connecting people is something I consider very beneficial, so I knew that the work I would be doing in this industry and as part of the Vocus Graduate Program would be meaningful and important – which was a big factor to me when considering my options after university.”

Company culture was something really important to Ben when starting his career, and something he says he loves about Vocus.

“The company culture is great; it feels safe, welcoming, collaborative and friendly. People are always happy to help you out if you're unsure of anything. The structure feels relatively flat, and I love that you are able to easily talk to anyone in the business.”

Ben has found great value in both the formal and informal learning opportunities and support that the Vocus Graduate Program has provided so far. Each graduate is assigned a mentor upon joining the business, which helped Ben settle into corporate life smoothly.

“The learning opportunities and the level of support have been incredible. By working on various graduate projects and initiatives across the business I’ve been able to understand the company on a broader scale and gain a wider context of how my contributions fit into the bigger picture.”

“I have been able to learn skills I wouldn't have imagined learning otherwise and have put these into practice on interesting projects and in very supportive teams.”

Ben has spent most of his time with the Network Engineering team at Vocus so far, working on a number of different projects across internal tools and system visibility, customer-facing software and network management systems.

“Knowing that the work I am doing is making a big difference, makes me so excited to continue contributing to improvements across the business.”

“Vocus also feels like a great sized business – it’s small enough to be hands on and see the direct impact of what you're working on, but large enough to be working on interesting and innovative large-scale projects.”

Within the Network Engineering team, Ben has been able to see projects through from start to finish - helping make improvements to software, and building features into our platform to manage and automate device configuration. Additionally, and with the support of his team – he was given full responsibility to build a system that gives other teams visibility into our platforms and infrastructure, to help with quickly diagnosing potential issues.

For those thinking of applying for the Vocus Graduate Program, Ben’s advice is ‘go for it!’ For him, Vocus’ Graduate Program has been well set up to ease him into the corporate world in a very supportive and enjoyable environment.

“Being a part of a responsible and innovative company, in an interesting industry, is exciting – I’m doing important and truly enjoyable work, and I feel like our Graduate Program group is making a large and positive contribution to the company.”
